International trains for Alsfeld

One of the goals for the meeting in Alsfeld is to emphasize the international character of the layout by running trains connecting each national segment with other segments. Trains representing such connections are of course comprised of cars of all participating companies. These trains can be set up at will but a much better way to let everyone know Fremo is a prototype-oriented group is by replicating prototype trains with consists based on actuel plans and photos.

In the sixties and seventies, the main timeframe of the Fremo, lots of interesting internatinal trains traveled over the European rail network. Of course we cannot possibly model all of them, so we have to restrict us, determined by the following rules:

  • Trains should fit operationally on the layout
  • Maximum length is 7-8 cars
  • Most cars are available as models
  • All participating countries should be represented in the trains

One restrictions to all possible trains is that only a number of stations are suitably equipped to handle trains of this size, adding/removing cars, reversing direction or change engines. Also the layout as it is limits us to a specific number of routings. You cannot travel directly from DSB to DR (Warnemünde) or from NS to SBB (Rheingold). This has to be taken into consideration when planning trains.

Planning trains

This document is a proposal for the setup for the international trains to be used in Alsfeld. It is based on the rules as stated above. Also I have let the following considerations influence the setup:

  • breaking up trains/changing engines is best done in Bickburg
  • The capacity in Treudelburg is limited but can be used to switch trains
  • Rothenburg cannot handle many 'special' movements
  • Michelstadt is off-limits
  • Traffic internal to CSD-DR and NSB-DSB are not described as these do not touch the mainline (and because of a lack of knowledge on my part. Love to hear more of these trains)
  • Train capacity on the mainline between Bickburg, Treudelburg and Walburg is limited by the single-track segment at Delthin.
  • Rufwil (and the rest of the SBB segment) has limited capacity for handling large trains.
  • OBB – SBB trains can be run on track 3 of Rothenburg without interfering with the mainline. I would like to know more about typical Arlberg – trains to setup these trains

At the moment I have designed a number of trains, based on original plans, pictures etc. I will describe each of these trains with a description and, where available, a plan for the composition. These compositions are a condensed version of the actual trains, based on available cars.

The Timetable

The timetable is not ready yet. There are some dependencies between certain international trains that have to be set-up, because certain cars change trains in Treedelburg or Bickburg. Other stations do not have the capacity to do that. Even in Treudelburg, everething will have to fit or delays will appear. I have included a timetable density diagram as a separate attachment (see below).

The Trains

You can find descriptions of the selected trains on their own pages. Each is composed of a detailed description, the required engines and cars and the line-up.
